An assessment of traffic calming for trunk roads using the TRL driving simulator Prepared for Safety Standards and Research (Traffic, Safety and Environment Division), Highways Agency M C Taylor, L F Crinson and R E Osborn TRL Report TRL The report describes a project undertaken by TRL for the Highways Agency and designed to establish the speed-reducing performance of different traffic calming features appropriate to trunk road situations.

Trials were carried out on the TRL driving simulator. Describes a project in which the TRL driving simulator was used to examine the effectiveness of a range of signing and marking measures designed specifically for application on trunk roads.

The driving simulator provides a virtual validation space to test or manipulate factors that affect the driving experience, performance of the driver, the road environment and vehicle technology.

Traffic calming is applied to local streets with the aim of lowering traffic speeds and volumes, and sometimes, preventing particular types of vehicle travelling through an area. These aims are achieved by treating an area rather than a single section of road.

Traffic calming treatments cause drivers to change their driving pattern. Psychological theories that provide insight into how specific road design measures might reduce driving speeds are reviewed.

Ideas for traffic calming based on these principles are illustrated using photomontage and evaluated by means of focus groups, a questionnaire survey, on the TRL Driving Simulator and finally in on-road trials. The suggested approach involves the use of simulation tools in both micro and macro scale and tests with a driving simulator to assess the influence of traffic calming measures on speeds, travel.
